China keen to use Hambantota for ship repairs

China has offered to invest on a ship repair yard at the Hambantota port, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament today.

He said the Government should be open to the idea to consider allowing Chinese engineers to work at the yard, at least for five years, if a request to that effect is made.

Construction of the Hambantota port was jointly funded by the Ex-Im Bank of the People’s Republic of China and Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

The Government recently said the Hambantota Port will join with the country’s economic and trade strategy and be a vital base of maritime transportation. (Colombo Gazette)
