Global maritime logistics face no greater challenge than executing mass crew rotations during international border closures.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, global shipping faced a humanitarian and operational crisis: seafarers were trapped on board for months beyond their contracts, and commercial vessels faced imminent off-hire due to expiring crew certifications. Marine One stepped up to pioneer safe, compliant, and highly secure crew change operations. By establishing heavily monitored "bio-bubbles," we successfully executed a critical, large-scale crew rotation for a commercial vessel off the coast of Sri Lanka, proving our ability to navigate extreme regulatory challenges while keeping global trade moving.
A commercial vessel urgently required a mass crew rotation—coordinating the sign-off of exhausted crew members and the sign-on of fresh personnel. However, the operation faced severe obstacles:
The client required a ship agent capable of moving dozens of seafarers from an international airport, through the country, and onto the vessel without a single breach of health or immigration protocols.
To execute this unprecedented operation safely, Marine One designed and implemented a flawless end-to-end logistics corridor, coordinating directly with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense, Port Health Authorities, and the Department of Immigration.
We established a strict isolation corridor from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) directly to the seaport. Joining crew members were received directly from charter flights and transported in specially sanitized, isolated vehicles escorted by authorized personnel.
Safety was paramount. Every single crew member was sanitized, briefed, and subjected to rigorous PCR testing prior to boarding the transfer vessel. Our logistics personnel and boat crews operated in full PPE, ensuring zero risk of cross-contamination between the shore and the vessel.
To minimize the vessel's deviation and port costs, the physical crew swap was executed via designated supply boats at OPL. Despite challenging sea conditions, the Marine One team facilitated the rapid, safe transfer of baggage, outgoing crew, and incoming crew with absolute precision.
The exhausted off-signing crew were safely extracted from the vessel and moved through the reverse bio-bubble. We arranged designated isolation hotels for their mandatory layovers and coordinated their complex outbound repatriation flights to their home countries.
The rigorous standards Marine One developed during the pandemic now form the baseline of our everyday crew change excellence. For this operation, we delivered:
End-to-end management of visas, "Ok To Board" (OTB) authorizations, and complex port formalities.
Rapid ship-to-shore transfers to ensure minimal downtime and continuous operational readiness for the vessel.
All operations were conducted in strict adherence to IMO, Flag State, and local Port Authority regulations.
Live tracking and real-time troubleshooting by our operations desk to immediately resolve any flight or vessel delays.
The mass crew change was completed strictly on time, allowing the vessel to resume its commercial charter without a single hour of operational disruption.
The strict bio-bubble protocols resulted in a 100% infection-free transfer, protecting the vessel, the crew, and the local community.
Marine One demonstrated that even under the most extreme global conditions, we possess the infrastructure and logistical expertise to execute complex operations safely.
