Human Rights & Ethical Conduct Policy

Effective Date: Dec 28, 2015 | Last Updated: Dec 18, 2025

🌍 1. Purpose and Unyielding Commitment

In the complex and high-risk environments of international shipping and maritime security, the protection of human life and dignity is paramount. At Marine One (Pvt) Ltd, our commitment to human rights is not a passive statement; it is an active, heavily audited operational baseline.

We pledge to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct, ensuring our operations, supply chains, and armed security deployments never infringe upon fundamental human rights. This policy embeds the principles of:

  • The United Nations (UN) Global Compact and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
  • The International Code of Conduct for Private Security Service Providers (ICoCA).
  • The Montreux Document pertaining to the legal obligations of private military and security companies in armed conflict.
  • Core International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions.

Whether we are operating as a port agent or deploying our Private Maritime Security Company (PMSC) teams, we function in strict accordance with the sovereign laws of Sri Lanka and every international jurisdiction where our personnel operate.

🎯 2. Scope of Application

This policy governs the conduct of all Marine One employees, contingent workers, independent contractors, and our subsidiary, SOLAS Lanka (Pvt) Limited.

We project these non-negotiable expectations onto our entire supply chain. We require all vendors, local suppliers, and sub-contractors to maintain environmental, health, safety, and ethical practices that meet or exceed the ICoCA Code, our internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and our stringent Rules for the Use of Force (RUF).

🛡️ 3. PMSC Operations & Rules for the Use of Force (RUF)

As an armed maritime security provider, the potential impact of our operations on human rights is a critical focus. Marine One maintains robust, failsafe systems to avoid complicity in human rights violations:

  • Rules for the Use of Force (RUF): All armed deployments are governed by strict, legally vetted RUF. The use of force is always a last resort, strictly limited to the principles of necessity, proportionality, and the defense of human life against imminent threat.
  • Voyage Risk Assessments: We conduct continuous evaluations of human rights risks, piracy threats, and geopolitical instability along every transit route to minimize the likelihood of armed escalation.
  • Management Oversight: A dedicated, senior-level Management Oversight Committee actively monitors field operations, ensuring ethical principles are integrated into daily security and agency workflows.

🤝 4. Diversity, Dignity & Anti-Harassment

Marine One thrives on the strength of a diverse, cross-cultural workforce.

  • Equal Opportunity: We provide equitable employment and advancement opportunities regardless of race, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
  • Zero Tolerance for Harassment: We maintain a strictly regulated workplace—both on land and at sea—that is free from sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination. Every employee, contractor, and vessel crew member must be treated with absolute dignity.
  • Accountability: Operational managers are held directly responsible for fostering an inclusive environment. Any substantiated violations result in immediate disciplinary action, up to and including termination and legal reporting.

🛑 5. Eradication of Forced Labor & Protection of Minors

Operating in global maritime corridors requires extreme vigilance against human trafficking and modern slavery.

  • Child Labor: Marine One strictly prohibits the employment or operational use of anyone under the age of 18 across all our divisions and supply chains.
  • Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking: We enforce a zero-tolerance policy for human trafficking, slavery, or any form of forced, bonded, or indentured labor. We outright forbid any harsh or inhumane treatment, physical coercion, or corporal punishment within our ranks or the ranks of our vendors.

⚖️ 6. Maritime Labor Standards & Wages (MLC 2006 Alignment)

We ensure all personnel, from office staff to offshore security teams, operate under fair, legal, and humane conditions:

  • Working & Rest Hours: Workweeks and deployment schedules strictly comply with local labor laws and the principles of the ILO Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), preventing dangerous fatigue.
  • Fair Compensation: We guarantee that employee compensation meets or exceeds applicable minimum wage laws, including transparent provisions for overtime, hazard pay (where applicable), and legally mandated benefits.

🕊️ 7. Freedom of Association

Marine One respects the fundamental right of all employees to freely associate, organize, and engage in collective bargaining in accordance with local laws. We actively encourage a culture of open communication where operational ideas, safety concerns, and ethical questions can be shared with executive management without any fear of retaliation.

📢 8. Whistleblower & Grievance Mechanism

Transparency requires a safe mechanism for reporting. Any stakeholder, employee, crew member, or third-party civilian who identifies a potential violation of this Human Rights Policy is highly encouraged to report it immediately.

  • Secure Reporting: Reports, inquiries, and grievances can be directed securely to our Compliance Officer at info@marinelanka.lk.
  • Absolute Non-Retaliation: Marine One guarantees strict confidentiality and expressly forbids any form of retaliation, demotion, or hostility against any individual who reports a human rights or ethical concern in good faith.
